"Upholding," the National 22 July Memorial in Oslo

Fantini Mosaici honored to craft the National 22 July Memorial in Oslo

OSLO, NORWAYApril 24, 2026 – Fantini Mosaici, the world-renowned Italian atelier celebrated for over a century of artisanal excellence, is proud to announce its role in the realization of "Upholding," the official National 22 July Memorial in Oslo. Currently under production in the heart of the new Government Quarter, the project serves as a monumental tribute to the victims of the 2011 terror attacks, blending profound symbolism with world-class craftsmanship.

Designed by acclaimed Norwegian artist Matias Faldbakken and commissioned by KORO (Public Art Norway), the memorial is a centerpiece of the nation’s 15th-anniversary commemorations. Fantini Mosaici’s master artisans are currently transforming Faldbakken’s vision into a staggering 12-meter-high by 15-meter-wide mosaic masterpiece.

Artistry in Stone: The "Upholding" Project

The memorial is a technical and emotional marvel, characterized by:

  • The Mosaic: Comprised of approximately 500,000 hand-cut stones, the mosaic depicts a delicate wading bird native to the island of Utøya, reflected in the still waters of the Tyrifjord.
  • The Structure: The mosaic is braced by a massive steel rig, echoing the historical frame once used to protect Pablo Picasso’s "The Fishermen" in the same district—a symbol of democratic resilience and the preservation of culture.
  • A Participatory Tribute: In a moving gesture of unity, survivors and bereaved families have been invited to participate in the process, placing symbolic stones into the composition.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

For Fantini Mosaici, the Oslo Memorial represents a unique intersection of high-end architectural art and civic duty. Known typically for luxury installations in fashion boutiques and presidential palaces, the atelier has applied its "Made in Italy" expertise to ensure this memorial survives for centuries.

"A mosaic is one of the only image formats that survives fire, earthquakes, and time," notes artist Matias Faldbakken. "It is, in every sense, painting for eternity."

The project is slated for completion and official unveiling in Summer 2026. This installation further cements Fantini Mosaici’s status as a global leader in public art production, following recent high-profile projects in London, Milan, and Macau.
